Hofmann's Lessons
"Hofmann's Lessons" was written as a memoir of a well loved artist-teacher by a grateful student. While some students, like Myron Stout, have copied down Hofmann's words as they were spoken in the studio, I have recalled events, places and people who had been part of the scene as well as the guidelines to the creation of a great painting as they were presented by Hofmann in the studio. The meaning of "push and pull," the importance of working from life, the millimeter effect, dynamic composition, luminosity, etc are examined. The collector as well as the art student can benefit from these stories.
